This thing is a beautiful work of engineering.

 

Between every war they try to retire this aircraft, and during every war they revive it. We are running out of parts, with no spares being manufactured. Politicians and military geniuses drive me nuts sometimes. They want the latest greatest and gee whiz, while this old aircraft just does its job simply and reliably.

It really is the aircraft that won't die, much like the B52.

You don't, but the USA does. Currently we are fighting two wars and finishing up a 3rd. This aircraft just keeps proving its utility. It is a precision weapon that brings its pilots home. It was affectionately nicknamed the wart hog, because it is not sleek and fast, but gets down and dirty. I remember pictures in the first Gulf war where there was a single strut holding the wing on, about 4"X4" bar of metal. The plane and pilot came home though.

It is not for nuclear war, it is for conventional wars that have hard targets that need gone. It does this very well.

 

A C-130 with the gattling gun sticking out of the side does an impressive job on hard targets as well.

I'd hesitate to call Spooky a precision weapon. Now if you have a city block that needs removing...

Both of them have butt loads of ammo. As I recall (and am not sure of) Spooky and Casper both had JATOs to help get them off the ground, but once their ordinance load was lightened even a little the aircraft didn't have any problems.

 

When I was at Ft. Lewis I got to see them taking off and landing out of McChord, and once, while deer hunting on post, I watched two of them flying around in pretty close formation. Definitely not what you want to see if you are a bad guy in a tank, let alone a deer hunter with only a .358

 

They play hunt the tank around here, too. We had a pair go either side of the roof this morning at about 200 feet altitude.

 

Don't know if it's true, but it's said that they added the second engine to the A-10 because when the cannon was firing it would slow the planes speed so much that it would stop creating lift. Could actually fall from the sky when shooting. So they had to add a second engine.

I would put that in the myth catagory, though all the pilots describe a sensation of the aircraft stopping every time the gun is fired. The whole aircraft has double and triple redundancy. The engines are double redundancy.

I never had one of these. We 're too crowded here in the Athens city centre for these puppies (and my expensive hobbies reach as far as an expensive PC).

 

Prebuilt foam planes like these might be a good idea for learning to fly before getting a bigger one. The bigger, faster, more expensive planes are easier to crash and tend to break when you do crash them (speaking from experience).

I worked on the real aircraft that the model depicts.

 

My Dad worked on F100's in Vietnam.

He loved that aircraft. Have I mentioned I'm an Air Force brat?

He didn't like to talk about Nam and Korea much. One of the things he mentioned is when the pilot and aircraft didn't make it home, the mechanics were left wondering if it was something they did, or didn't do. Not a good feeling. When he as in a machine shop after he retired from the Air Force he was a perfectionist. Probably didn't hurt that they made military equipment.
