New Zealand plays Barry Manilow to repel parliament protesters
Authorities in New Zealand have been playing Barry Manilow's greatest hits in an attempt to dislodge protesters camped outside the parliament building.
Songs by the US singer are being played on a 15-minute loop, along with the Spanish dance tune, Macarena.
The demonstrators, who are angry at Covid-19 vaccine mandates, responded by playing songs such as Twisted Sister's We're Not Gonna Take It.

The era of coronavirus restrictions is fading away, but that doesn’t mean COVID-19 is gone.

Governments are racing to scrap the last remaining pandemic measures, eager to reset the world after two years of dramatic upheaval. Even slow-mover Germany is planning to unwind curbs, despite setting records for infections on a daily basis.

Officials say data and science are behind the decisions, but politics, as well as weariness and frustration, are mixed in too.
...
Among public-health experts, there’s concern that politicians have missed the lessons from the crisis, particularly the on again-off again curbs, and will be caught flatfooted if and when a relapse hits.

“For the past two years, we have misused the opportunity of the spring and summer, where behavior limits transmission, not to make good on the hard-earned control from harsh lockdowns,” Stephen Griffin, a virology professor at the University of Leeds. “The promises around there not being a need for further restrictions in the future have proven hollow.”
Sorry, but these are the types of decisions that science can't make. Follow the Science is a tag-line for not being stupid, not a form of governance.

When somebody doesn't bother to learn how to swim,
it's nobody else's fault when they drown.

In my opinion, learning how to stay healthy is not an "option" that You
can leave up to supposed "experts" to take care of after your health deteriorates.

Poor health is not "accidental", or "fate", or a "statistic",
it's neglect, plain and simple,
and You can't "force" anyone to take their health seriously.

All You can do is to set the best example that You can,
and hope that the ones You care about want to be like You.

There is absolutely ZERO that You can do to change the mind of a
person who is convinced that they "know" what they're doing.

The woman who made headlines for being dragged from the protest naked by police has addressed the hundreds of protesters still occupying Parliaments lawn, saying officers were "very kind" to her.
...
When asked why she was naked, she said, "In my experience at other occupation and seeing wahine take their clothes off, it worked."

"We greased up with coconut oil," she laughed, adding that before her arrest she had been "throwing" her naked body at them to make them back off.

"I would do a bit of twerking."

it's because epidemiologists advising government and talking to media apparently cannot explain difference between Phage, flue, cold, Ebola, AIDS, black plague, smallpox...

The nation’s leading health officials said Wednesday that the U.S. is moving closer to the point that COVID-19 is no longer a “constant crisis” as more cities, businesses and sports venues began lifting pandemic restrictions around the country.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said during a White House briefing that the government is contemplating a change to its mask guidance in the coming weeks. Noting recent declines in COVID-19 cases, hospital admissions and deaths, she acknowledged “people are so eager” for health officials to ease masking rules and other measures designed to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

“We all share the same goal – to get to a point where COVID-19 is no longer disrupting our daily lives, a time when it won’t be a constant crisis – rather something we can prevent, protect against, and treat,” Walensky said.

With the omicron variant waning and Americans eager to move beyond the virus, government and business leaders have been out ahead of the CDC in ending virus measures in the last week, including ordering workers back to offices, eliminating mask mandates and no longer requiring proof of vaccine to get into restaurants, bars and sports and entertainment arenas.
The feds are finally getting the message.

‘Fortress Australia’ Has a New Message: Come Back
But it will take a little more time for Australia’s welcome mat to roll out all the way. The entire state of Western Australia — a third of Australia’s vast land mass, but home to just 10 percent of the population — has essentially been closed to both international travelers and even vaccinated Australian citizens for most of the pandemic. It plans to reopen to vaccinated travelers on March 3, with testing rules on arrival. The state, which has reported about 2,900 total cases and 10 deaths since the pandemic began, is home to Perth — one of the world’s most remote major cities — more than 7,000 miles of coastline, the Kimberley region’s dramatic sandstone gorges and wine destinations like Margaret River. While the federal government can open the nation’s borders, the states can still set their own Covid restrictions, including entry rules.

California became the first state to formally shift to an “endemic” approach to the coronavirus with Gov. Gavin Newsom’s announcement Thursday of a plan that emphasizes prevention and quick reaction to outbreaks over mandated masking and business shutdowns.

The milestone, nearly two years in the making, envisions a return to a more normal existence with the help of a variety of initiatives and billions in new spending to more quickly spot surges or variants, add health care workers, stockpile tests and push back against false claims and other misinformation.

“We are moving past the crisis phase into a phase where we will work to live with this virus,” he said during a news conference from a state warehouse brimming with pandemic supplies in Fontana, east of Los Angeles.

Australia opens its international borders to all vaccinated tourists Monday, nearly two years after the island nation first imposed some of the world's strictest Covid-19 travel restrictions.

"The wait is over," Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said during a press conference on Sunday ahead of the re-opening.

"Pack your bags," he told potential visitors, adding, "Don't forget to bring your money with you, because you'll find plenty of places to spend it."
The first flight into Sydney Airport will arrive from Los Angeles at 6 am (1900 GMT), followed by arrivals from Tokyo, Vancouver and Singapore.

There is a new Covid variant in many counties who have dropped mandates. It is a mutation of the Omicron variant created in a country that has too many unvaccinated people. A Greek letter has not been selected for it yet.

The Queen of the UK has the Omicron variant now. I noticed that she rarely wore a mask.

The highly contagious Omicron sub-variant known as BA.2 is gaining a foothold in Canada just as provinces begin removing pandemic restrictions, according to newly released data.
...
Early research on BA.2 suggests that people who have been infected with BA.1 will not be re-infected with it, said Otto, who is tracking the sub-variant.
Places that had low previous Omicron immunity from isolation and restrictions (like Denmark) will have higher BA.2 infections but numbers of infections is no longer the correct metric. It's unlikely to make much difference in the US or Canada infection rates.

https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/02/denmark-covid-restrictions/621482/
“If you are following Denmark’s infection numbers, this seems like a very, very strange thing to do,” Michael Bang Petersen, a Danish researcher who led a global survey of COVID attitudes and advises the Danish government, told me. But Petersen defends the decision. Because of falling ICU admissions and shorter hospital stays, he said, COVID is no longer a socially critical sickness in Denmark.

Derek Thompson: Denmark just lifted all COVID restrictions. What justifies this decision?

Michael Bang Petersen: Our hospitals are not being overwhelmed. We have excellent data surveillance of our hospital system in Denmark, and when we look at the number of people in ICUs, it’s dropping. We have a lot of people in hospitals with positive tests, but most of them are testing positive with COVID rather than being there because of COVID. They’re also in the hospital for a much shorter duration than previous waves. The number of people being treated for pneumonia is a critical indicator, and that’s going down as well.

The Covid vaccination rate in Denmark is high like here in Canada. But many medical experts say it is too soon to drop restrictions.
Many poor countries like USA have low vaccination rates.
