Excuse me, but I read somewhere a while ago from a reliable source in the internet that the audio signal sent through a green banana results in an entirely different spectrum than one sent through a yellow banana ... and don't get me started on oxygen-free bananas ...
Ah, but he started with a CD recording as his source, not the ever-oh-so-more-pure vinyl, so off course all of them were indistinguishably bad!
My guess is that this will convince at least 0.000000001% of audiophiles that they have been being duped all these years -- or about the same fraction as get convinced every time someone does a similar experiment, and always with the same results.

But this question brings up an "obvious" experiment that I don't recall ever hearing having been done (but that I would think that something along the lines must have been done at some point) that tries to quantify things. For instance, progressively using thinner and thinner cable until the audiophiles can discern the difference to a statistically-significant degree. I suspect that the cost of doing a well-designed study simply doesn't justify the effort, since anyone that would actually pay attention to the results is already more than satisfied by the plethora of published studies like this one.
The whole thing brings to mind a display at a media store back in the 2000ish time frame. It was pushing their "power center" product that was supposed to make all of your audio-equipment sound SO much better compared to using a common power strip. And it did. Flip the switch between them and there was a very distinct difference. The setup was such that, supposedly, by flipping the switch you simply powered up either the power center or the normal power strip, with a box then routing the power to the components. I have no idea what was in the box, but I suspected that the whole thing was a sham and that, in addition to powering up one or the other power strip, it was turning on something that injected noise into the system.The display was oriented so that the connections in back were accessible, so when now one was looking I just swapped the two outlets that the two strips were plugged into. Sure enough, now the vaunted power center sounded like crap and the cheapo power strip sounded pristine.

Bad people don't die. It seems like no matter what they did or how many people they hurt or how long they did it, they were always good and decent people. It's one thing to keep your mouth shut at the funeral and not speak ill of the dead, but no need to canonize them, either.
