I tend to watch the facial expressions as the statements are made. It's funny though that when called out on something the same answer is given,"I was being sarcastic". Like inject bleach.

They can certainly try, especially if they know factoids about a lot of things (but not much else), or are particularly charismatic. It doesn't help that the Dunning-Kruger effect gives evidence that dumb people don't realize they're dumb.

I have watched it happen time and time again. In my world the problem is made greater by the fact luck is usually on the side of the actor. "Experience" plays a role as well. All it takes is a less informed audience...
