For office paper typing maybe but we never used 2 spaces on teletype (The day I passed Navy teletype typing school was a great day) machines as it wasted valuable and at the time slow transmission speeds sending unnecessary characters in formatted messages.

No STOP key on our machines but we did have a BELL to wake people up on the other side.

If you see lots of random-looking characters in an URL field, after the "?" and of the form: xyz=jsdlf9u43qd09yg035jpoq3jg0yuhgoiqeg (or whatever), that is usually tracking code.

I start by deleting everything after (and including) the "?". Then I test the link. Sometimes, one of the fields specifies the actual page you are referring to, and you'll have to keep that.

Yup. And on this site, I can't tell where one sentence ends, and another begins.

 

Remember when they touted computers as the new paperless office concept. I guess they forgot about printers. Maybe the single space is the new way to save paper? I wonder how many deleted spaces = 1 tree?

I skipped Morse class but my roommate would send Morse in his sleep while at school. They decided to send me to the new fangled FLTSATCOM class instead.

That's all the proof anyone needs that a single space is WRONG. I will continue to use two spaces even though this site and probably many others delete one. I like to hope that English teachers will still flunk students that fail to properly use two.

This is just the kind of thing that really fires up the grumpy old man in me. I understand that language evolves, both spoken and written. The people using it define the language, not the rules. The rules struggle to keep up. But I still want to strangle the people causing the changes. There's a reason we chose to use two spaces and I see no valid reason to stop.

Really, one space after a period is to me a far greater crime than anything caught by the silly "no politics" policy. It's promoting evil in EVERY SINGLE POST on this site. Hypocrites.

I remember seeing our instructor taking down Morse at 30wpm and see him get up from his seat to close a window, come back to the desk and catch up!

I am badly out of practice but years ago using an Iambic set of paddles I could send @ >30WPM but struggled to keep up copying 10WPM. Back in my "glory days". Old and rusty now. I did know a few Extra Class hams that ran code ~30WPM all the time. Their eyes would go unfocused and glazed over and just kinda zone out copying and sending code. You would kinda have to wake them up from their daze to talk to them. They tell me they hear in words and not just the individual letters. I have a straight key that keeps me from going too fast on send. What you send is what speed will be replied at so going fast on send, you had better be able to copy at that speed.

That works in theory, I used to dread when a visiting war ship would dock (port of Tripoli) and we had to open a security link every A.M.
I would initiate the opening and then a stream would reply, if you asked to, QRS, send slower they would lose patience a little.
Same with the international Cable and Wireless operators.
These guys did it as a profession!

Quick question - how do you get your ear to oralize?
