 ... how many times do I have to tell people that Taco Bell is *not* Mexican food?
I think anyone that cares already knows that.

The mistake may have an historical origin. Taco Bell came onto the scene where I lived when I was starting high school (ie. a long time ago). At the time there were precisely zero Mexican restaurants (or people) around and nothing else even close. People needed a simple way to describe the newcomer, and somehow "Mexican" was the word people used. I don't know if "Tex-Mex" was too nuanced or complicated, but nobody had ever heard that term at the time. We had Italian, German and French restaurants, and so Taco Bell was deemed "Mexican".

Another way of looking at it is the Venn diagram approach. Taco Bell food is none of the other nationalities named above but you could argue that the TexMex circle overlaps the circle called Mexican, and might even be inside of it from the perspective of a northern Yankee. Tacos and burritos didn't overlap any other circle we were familiar with.

 ... how many times do I have to tell people that Taco Bell is *not* Mexican food? ... it's rather like Tex-Mex, which is an entirely different sub-culture / cuisine ... in fact, not a single place down here that I know of serves anything even remotely similar to what Taco Bell offers... thank goodness...
What? Taco Bell was how we learned to speak 'Mexican'.

that's a pretty good analogy ... I never said that Taco Bell didn't have mexican influence in it, it most definitely does ... it's like meat loaf, an american plate with british origins
Yeah, the trouble with any appropriated culture is the assumption that it tells you something about that culture. It's closer to the allegory of the blind men and the elephant. Yes, it tells you a little bit but the picture is much larger.

Schwarzenegger is still solid. Surprise double jump kick to the back and the guy says on his feet.

 That's one of the many dangers of being a celebrity... the Terminator might be old, but he's definitely the opposite of infirm... glad that things didn't get worse than that
