I've always thought of military ships as very uncomfortable places to live in...
It's only slightly worse than a prison for living conditions. You can take a lot in cramped living conditions but extreme heat or cold can break people under stress (3 months floating off the shore of Iran during the hostage crisis, 115 F feels like 150 F at sea). I was lucky, most of the spaces we worked in were temperature and humidity controlled for the equipment not for personal. The main UHF/HF transmitter room had its own independent HVAC system for critical equipment and was a high security area so most of us lived and slept there off duty instead of our normal racks.
