True story except for the last paragraph is embellished.

The end of the story was that the guy actually got life sentence for that because the judge took into account his 30 previous arrests.

I know the snopes story, but I don't think snopes claim to the moral of the story can also be incorrect.

That bit was pure invention on the part of some person who inserted the additional paragraph into the news account, thereby transforming it into a "Don't mess with the Marines" object lesson.

The morals included:

1. Don't steal
2. Don't stab someone
3. Don't mess with Marines

There are some who will stand up for what is right.

They subdued the individual, who I'm sure resisted ... after all he stabbed their friend. They didn't report any "bruises" that didn't require hospitalization.
