It is a complex signal chain, and each stage can be different. For example, when listening to audio from any satellite source, the audio information is almost certainly digital, like the digital audio on a CD (but a different digital format). That digital audio is modulated onto a sub-carrier that can be amplitude, frequency, or phase modulated, or combinations of those methods. Then a bunch of subcarriers are modulated onto the main carrier, again with a pretty complex modulation method.
