Alternative MOSFET selection

Hi,

I am currently using a MOSFET in a circuit I have developed, it is the ST STF17N62K3 N-channel Power MOSFET (http://www.st.com/en/power-transistors/stf17n62k3.html).

I'd like to select an alternative MOSFET as this particular one has a relatively high part cost in my BOM ($5.43 from Digi Key) and I think it is being phased out.

My key parameters are:
- Transistor polarity: N-channel
- Vds: 250V min.
- Id: 1A min.
- Vgs: 30V

This one has a TO-223 package and I'd like an alternative to be an SMD device.

Can anyone recommend an alternative which would be cheaper but offer similar performance?

Thanks

I suggest that you use the search option on one of the electrronic component suppliers in your country. (You have not given that information in your profile.) Many suppliers have the option to select the rage of the various parameters. This is a link to a search for mosfets on the Farnell (UK supplier) website.

Thanks for the replies and links.

Other than the parameters I gave what are the key parameters I need to be aware of to help filter the results?

Bertus - is it good to have a higher Rds ON value? Would a higher value generate more heat in the circuit?

Hello,

Yes, a higher Rds ON will lead to higher losses, so will produce more heat.
The one you pointed at was 0.28 Ohms, the one I gave you has 1.8 Ohms, so a factor of 6.5 more resistance and heat.

It used to be called; "parametric search". Normally you'd chose by current or voltage and find a table of devices that meet that criteria - then you just narrow down on the remaining parameters.

They vary in layout a bit - sometimes multiple tables are segregated by package style.

If you only need one amp you can allow the Rds on to go up without much problem.
With 100 milliohms it would only get 5 or 6 degrees over ambient.
