The schematic in post #18 is the tone generator linked to a sequencer as suggested, just not the sequencer he started with. Each of the eight unmarked resistors is meant to be a fixed resistor or pot to set the frequency of one of the tones. The 4051 analog switch selects each resistance in sequence, changing at a rate determined by the oscillator section of the 4060. Note that the analog switch has enough internal resistance in an "on" channel to affect the frequency of a tone. Calculated resistor values should be decreased slightly to allow for this. There are several 4051 flavors on the market, so check the datasheet for the on resistance value of the part you use.
