Is there an application for the tlv431 or tl431 configured as a precision voltage reference generating same voltage over a wide range of input voltages?

Hmm possible but it’s got some temperature drift. I favor band gap reference for precision. It has about 20ppm precision over a wide temp range of 100C. Further reading it appear that a band gap reference is used in 78xx, TL431, LM317 and LM337 regulators. So I suppose a 78xx could be used for an accurate reference as well. It also depends on the accuracy of the input voltage and drop out.

That 1.24V in the diagram is the band gap reference.

Actually it looks pretty solid. Theoretically band gap can be even steadier.

This is the best explanation I’ve seen, it shows the reason why it’s so stable. http://www.diegm.uniud.it/driussi/teaching/dispense/Bandgap-reference.pdf
