OK, and that is the one thing that I had not thought about. You are certainly correct!! So the DC level needs to be greater than the AC signal maximum amplitude.
Now that I think about it more, that also applied to modulating the gas lasers and the glow tubes. And it certainly applies to amplitude modulated RF amplifiers, such as all of our AM radio stations.
