Hi everyone. Hope I have this in the right section.
I wanted to replace the current unreliable setup my truck has for engaging the 4wd with something a little simpler. Right now a dc motor works in tandem with a computer to turn a 1/4" shaft on the transfer case to one of 3 positions (2wd, 4wd high range, 4wd low range) based on driver input.
I thought using something like, say, like a servo motor with controller might work better. Something where I could turn a knob and the motor would move approximately around the same distance. Speaking of distance, the motor would to travel from the 12 o'clock position (which is 2wd) to 6 o'clock *(4wd high) to around 8 o'clock (4wd low). The torque required to move the shaft is quite low (I can almost turn it with my fingers), so the motor doesn't need to be. terribly beefy.
Anyway, does this idea sound feasible at all? I'm more of a mechanic than an electronics person so this is somewhat uncharted waters for me.
