A simple question about zener diode

Hello everyone !
Would like to ask you the following question: the diagram below shows zener diode wave clipper, but exactly does it produce that clipping ? Why the current cannot just flow in the right part of the diagram, where load will be connected ?

The zener diode was designed for clip the light current of load, and it always across on the load, so now do you know where does it located?

I mean, why the current MUST flow through this diode at all ? The can't it just start flowing to the right part straight away ?
The circuit does not show an output load to the right so it is assumed to be an open circuit, and consequently takes no current.
Thus the only place for current to flow is through the diode, once the voltage has exceeded its zener breakdown point.
