Philips was once a company I had respect for... that is until the marketing depart went off the rails advertising their for consumer products.
When I first came here, I got a job TV servicing, among them Philips tube TV's and their transition to solid state model.
Both, technically and performance wise knocked the socks off any N.A. model at that time, Tech's would latch on to any trade-ins for their own personal usage, they were highly prized!.

I have a Philips 26" tube that I am retiring this evening when my son comes over to help me move it. I bought it back in 1996 and I've intended to replace it with a flat screen once it dies - it just won't die. So today, I will throw away a perfectly good tv. I can't believe I'm doing this. Give me a call if you want this highly prized antique.

The 52" Samsung 4K has been sitting next to the working Philips for 3-weeks. This room will be transformed!

Our Maintenance guys just tried to snake a 50-foot HDMI cable from a conference room desk to the floor, up the wall and to a ceiling mounted projector. Projector said "No signal". The AV expert was called in and recommended either a $50 signal booster or a Monster cable ($200 from Amazon in two days and $300 from him same day). Since the boss didn't want another device to worry about (booster), he went for the $300 Monster cable today. To my surprise, it worked.

I bought around 82ft from Amazon.

Only $70 plus free shipping. I have an additional 10 feet or so coming from my pc to an active splitter . Out of the splitter is the 82 foot cable and another 10ft cable. It is an active cable with repeater built in. powered from the hdmi.

I am not an "AV expert". Just some schmo with an Amazon account.

Yes, you are a schmo with an Amazon account but your gene pool is likely three or four times deeper than my maintenance guys.

I couldn't believe they pulled a random name out of a hard copy of the "yellow pages" to find their video expert. Nobody else must have had a copy of the yellow pages since the video expert was available the same afternoon.

Can't say I blame him. Monster cables are usually good but overpriced. I've paid hundreds on shipping for a $50 part because the lost production time was a lot more valuable than counter-to-counter same day air freight.

I figure a $700 juicer should grow the fruit, squeeze the juice and serve it to me chilled and then I would still question the price. My mother managed to provide fresh juice pulp included (dad figured pulp was good for us) to four children and our father using one of these.

After mom passed away my sister ended up with it. Gee at about 70 years old that juicer still works fine.

I saw a reference to about what my dad would say regarding people who have more money than brains.

Remember when you could buy a 25lb bag of oranges at the local store for a few bucks to squeeze using that.

This is a good price today.

My 1% comment was talking about HP's claim that $700 wasn't an outrageous price for a countertop appliance.
Please be advised that my comment was merely to the effect that $700 is more than reasonable for certain blenders and food processors!

That said, having (now) read the article:oops:, I see (and fully concur with) your points Re: the product in question! Beyond all that, IMNSHO, 'internet connectivity' is a deal breaker in all cases!

IMO the truly frighting 'take away' is not what people will pay for little return -- but, rather, what they'll sacrifice in the way of privacy, etc in the name of convenience! - 'IOT' and it's ilk is the true 'creeping crud' for which the myopic (frankly, collectively stupid) 'masses' have only themselves to blame!

Best regards

Yes, life was both good and simple.

During my years with the company we would get gifts for years of service which was pretty nice stuff. I think it was my 20 year mark about the nicest thing offered was a Cusinart large model food processor so I got that. My wife has a nice little one she uses. That was going on ten years ago and it still sits on the shelf, never had a need for it. When I was living and working in Italy everyone who came over bought a pasta making machine. They use it once and then it just sort of sits around. I do like the little Cusinart coffee bean grinder as I like getting quality coffee and grinding the beans. :)

Yeah, the juicer is still around. Bet my mom paid at least $0.49 for that.

The internet! I can't figure out how to use that damn new fangled thing. :p
My son's girlfriend works at a nursing home. She is just amazed how many of the residents have Facebook accounts. A group of three 90+ women spend their days making new friends in foreign countries through Facebook and asking questions about the places those new friends live. Then, at meal time, the three women all tell each other about what/who they met that day. Amazing.

I'll give you this, @shortbus -- A guy who objects to (what he perceives as) overvaluation of his work can't be all bad!;)

HP:)
And I'll give you this, someone that uses such big words when talking to the unwashed masses and reverts to everyday speak when talking to her 'buds', still can't understand, it's not what you perceive your work is worth, but what the corporations and unincorporated companies are WILLING to pay. And there are unemployed people with the same skills ready to accept the going wage.
