I have a segment dispaly and
I would like to display 4 bit up/down counter's output whose outputs are four and the display has 7 inputs. how do I do the connections?

 

You need a BCD to 7-Segment Display Driver IC, like a 4000-series CMOS CD4511B or CD4543B.
If your counter is binary, things get more complicated. A Dallas/Maxim ICM7212 IC can take a 4-bit binary input and drive up to four 7-segment LED displays.
