Something like:

This assumes your current source is actually grounded as you previously drew, if not then we need to revise. R1 is your burden resistor to convert current to voltage as discussed above. R2 is to limit current in the event of surge. Ideally it should be as large as possible, dependent on the requirements of your ADC which will tell you what the recommended maximum input resistor v conversion time is. D1 & D2 are TVS diodes or a purpose-made 2-diode ESD protection package, eg Nexperia PESD5V0X1BT,215 or similar
Yes that is something I worked on before, but the only problem was the forward voltage drop of the diode at no load condition giving unexpected(0.6-1.2v) value at ADC input.

You must have connected it backwards. In @Irving ’s circuit there is no current through either diode unless there is an over-current situation, or the current source is connected backwards.

I have seen several 4-20mA circuits, in which the external current input is connected to a bridge rectifier to avoid any possibility of reverse connection.

You must have connected it backwards. In @Irving ’s circuit there is no current through either diode unless there is an over-current situation, or the current source is connected backwards.

I have seen several 4-20mA circuits, in which the external current input is connected to a bridge rectifier to avoid any possibility of reverse connection.
