When I worked for Collins radio back in the80s this was a popular transistor for a lot of their receivers. Nowadays it seems to be unobtainium. It has specs that had to be seen to be believed. The one that deeply impressed me was the 1300Mhz roll off. It is not a high power device but compares nicely to a 2N2219. So where can this device or its equivalent be found at a reasonable price?

What is that you are needing to match? DigiKey has lots of NPN transistors that have MUCH higher transition frequencies.

The NTE278 seems like a pretty good match. Is there something about it that rules it out?

I don't know what qualifies as a reasonable price -- these are a bit under a dollar each at DigiKey-onesies prices.

If you are willing to use SMT parts, you can get ones with a 14 GHz transition frequency for about 38 cents.

I was always trying to make HF amplifiers in my younger days, but as it happened I made better oscillators than the amplifiers I was trying for.
Yes, I did miss them, I have bookmarked them for future reference, Thank you.
