In looking around a bit... I believe "step-down" is the correct term.

12v automotive application. I need an adjustable "???" to step-down between 12v and 9(ish)v. Help?

Step it down to what? 12 V stepped down to 9V?
Or some other voltage?

Does the output need to be adjustable, of do you want a fixed output of 9 V. How much output current do you need?

Search for a voltage regulator with 7809 in the part number, such as LM7809.

The 317 others suggest will do it, but it will waste power and dissipate heat.

An off the shelf cigarette socket to USB charger can usually be modified. Most use a traceable SMPSU chip, so you can identify the voltage setting resistors and probably graft in a pot for variable voltage.

Update: Need a solution with lead-wires. Heat-sink? Noise would be a problem for the automotive project.

Can you put a little more time into your post and state your exact needs? What do you mean "lead wires, "heat sink". No one can help you if you can't specify your requirement.
