Just relax... this article is great for people just starting out. I found it helpful. Also note that he said most leds - not all. 1.8v white LEDs are uncommon, just because you have them doesnt mean the article is wrong.
Seems there are always exceptions; most LED's mark the cathode with a flat spot or a dimple on the case bottom or a short lead; but not always, I have both, so always check first.
