If you attach it to a tiny bluetooth mircontroller then you can send that data to your phone automatically.
But that's pushing up the price even further for the user, making it uncompetitive with what's already on the market.

How many hobbyists need a heart rate sensor anyway?
What would they all be doing with them?
I would have thought the chances of 200 hobbyists jumping for joy and saying 'give me some of that' is pretty much zero myself.
As mentioned previously, best bet is to find an OEM and try to get them interested.

I would like a sensor I could wear on an arm band, just as I now do with my iPod or iPhone when I run. Because of the placement right next to my iPhone, a a wired solution could be an option. But yeah, it would be an OEM that makes such a thing.

I have to agree. From the responses i have received there is not enough interest in the sensor.

But does it work when you are moving around?
Most of the photometric heart rate sensors I have seen don't like movement.

Fix that problem, and you have something.
