Wish to design a DC-DC buck converter

This is a challenging design. Have you previously done anything like this?
It might be better to start with the basic components:
  1. The inductor
  2. The filter capacitor
  3. The diode
  4. The MODFET switch
Are you familiar with any SPICE simulators? The reason I ask is that they are useful for understanding the basics of SMPS design.
Last question. Are you sure that a buck topology is what you want?

I got few parts,
TPS40061, TPS40060, LM5088, LM5088 External MOSFETs.
L4970A
PI3585-00-QFYZ
SIC461ED-T1-GE3

The design requirment looks for older technology.
Among mentioned parts, how about LM5088?
