Wireless Trivia Buzzers

Full disclosure -- the most experience I have in working with anything circuit-wise is a Makey Makey board, so I am truly an amateur.

I would like to build wireless trivia buzzers. I have the buttons, that when pressed, close a single circuit. When buying a microcontroller, what would you recommend? Since the microcontroller will simply be programmed to send a single alphabet letter, it doesn't have to be that sophisticated. I am looking for something small and cheap (Arduino and Zigbee are much too powerful for my use -- and expensive too!). I have a friend who will help me write the software part, but am looking for advice on what to buy that will transmit a signal 30-50 feet to a USB microcontroller dongle. Thanks for any help with this project.
