If I place a ferrite aerial on a PCB with a ground plane will this degrade the aerial performance?

I have seen ferrite antennas on pcb's using plastic spacers, to keep the antenna about 1 cm above the pcb.

I don't think so. Ferrite rod antenna receives the magnetic part of the EM wave. It is also very directional. It has to be at right angles to the direction towards the radio transmitter.

 

Placing a ferrite rod antenna directly over a PCB ground plane often degrades its performance. A copper ground plane supports eddy currents induced by the antenna's magnetic field. These currents dissipate energy. The antenna's sensitivity becomes effected as a result.
