I remember my brother living in a neighborhood where a bobcat had been adopted. All the other tomcats had a haunted look about them.

I'll bet! They looked like this;

 

Mostly they kept looking over their shoulders, and stepping very softly. We heard it howl once. The effect was bone chilling.
