Who are you?

Hi all

I'm a self-taught musician with an education as a studio-technician. 10 years ago I had a surgery that unfortunately destroyed my voice, so my time as a font-singer was totally lost and I started to delve into one of my childhood interests, electronics.

I'm a late bloomer when it comes to math, so all-thou I have build several Josty and Velleman kits in my youth, I had no idea about why or how they worked. I eventually learned a little about the general idea of the individual components function, but math was always my biggest obstacle, I'm slowly getting better at it thou.

I started reading "Lessons in Electric Circuits" from this site and have really learned a lot from it.
It might be my lack of mathematical understanding thats the cause, but it seams to me that there are a slight decimal error in Vol. 1 Chapter 7.
The voltage-drop over R3 and R4 is shown as 15.373V, but I get 15,3716706V (≈15,372) ?

My current projects include a STM-32 based piezo-to-midi converter (midi-drumkit) and a solar-powered self-driving lawnmower build around a Raspberry Pi.
I also spend a lot of time trying to learn about programming and have build a few open-source programs and games.

I have just bought my first scope, a used Hameg 203-7 in mint condition, and have plans to build a better lab-power-supply and a function-generator.

btw. English is not my native language, so please excuse me if my choice of words and my spelling are a bit off :)

It seems this is the circuit in question?

In my experience apraisal of discrepancy is best achived via an alternate, utilitarian (in this case positively vulgar) approach:

So...

E=24
R(R1R2)=1/(R1^-1+R2^-1) ≈71.42857
R(R3R4)=1/(R3^-1+R4^-1) ≈ 127.2727

Hence:
Rt=R(R1R2)+R(R3R4) ≈198.7013
I=E/Rt≈0.1208

V(R3R4)=I*R(R3R4)≈15.3745

And the moral to the story? --- Don't let rounding artifacts keep you awake nights!:)

Best regards
HP

This is to answer, Who am I? I a retired electrician trying to learn a new field, electronics. I also fool around with 1/32 slot cars. I'm now an Inventor, and finally I am having one of my inventions going thur a patent search. This good news just happened a couple days ago. In about 2.5 months I will be able to show or sell my 1st invention. I'm excited. I am also a Spiritual person. I used to have my own business that only lasted for 5.5 years. The early 90 recession put me under. I have now started a new company which I named, B.I.T. I consider it a research n development company. If my invention sells, and my lawyers say, it will be commercially sold in the hundreds. If they are right, I might be able to get back on my feet again, maybe buy a house again. Thanks for asking. Thanks for listening. Whatashame out.

Oh, PS , to the people into Star Wars, I own, by simple chance, a dozen Star Wars, unused, iron-ons (for tee shirts) in mint condition, dating back to 1977, 79, from the first Star Wars movie. I have Darth Vader, Hans Solo, Chewy, Princess Liya n so on n so forth. I'm willing to sell n not for much.

Hi, I am Isaac from Ghana and I just joined All About Circuits. I am an undergrad studying electrical/electronic engineering in school but the kind of education they give us is just focused on teaching us how to answer exams questions pass exams....which i find very ridiculous.. very little practicals... if things continue the way they currently are, i wont be able to, in good conscience call myself an electrical engineer even after graduating... so i want to actually know the practical aspect of electronics and i though joining All About Circuits will really help.

This kind of thing also happened in Taiwan, the students can't learn something useful from school, although the tech very famous to the whole world, but we still worried about the next generation maybe will loss the advantage of tech.

Even my daughter learning the VB program in high tech school, but they never really write the VB program input to the computer to run, they just taught that how to write VB on the paper, and examination, wow, I can't laugh about that, how come they only using imagination and paper work to study a computer language ... :(

Yeah thats true. My class was taught C programming in second year, second semester...and for our C programming final exams, we had to write and debug code on paper!.... during the whole semester, we NEVER wrote actual C code on a PC. just paper.... of course, some people had close to 100% but still may not be able to run a Hello World! program on PC. thats the kind of "education" we get here in my part of the world.

some of us want to be different...so we are trying to go the extra mile and actually learn real stuff.

Learning something useful in the real world, it will almost learn by ourselves, in the school just learning the basic conception of the theories, and they will easy to forgot, you will learn the formula in the experiment, to look a lots of circuits and their theories, know more about the function of each component, power source, voltage and current, digital and analog, bjts and mosfets, etc...

Thank you

I did my BS in EE and computer science long ago but have done only software for all the time since. Trying to get back in touch with my inner solder slinger and learning the tools to do simulations of combined digital and analog circuits.

Hello again!

I came back, so here's a more descriptive post about myself. Sorry if it's too long................

About myself
  • Name: Jose
  • Current occupation: I'm a "Higher Technician in Electronic Maintenance" mature (31 years old) electronics student at a vocational school
  • Location: Málaga, Spain
    • Touristic place near the coast.
    • Symptoms:
    • Tons severe social issues.
  • Tons of drugs.
  • Tons of people with mental health problems unable to receive proper therapy due to awful public mental heath.
    • So if you are poor, you have even more probabilities to get insane.
  • Abusive tourists.
  • Massive corruption:
    • Political and economical, in extremely miser ways.
    • People are generally extremely guile and a bit psychopathic:
      • Mainly because their environment and lack of stable economy.
  • Bad salaries:
    • Despite my lack of employment made me stay at home. Anyway, I know many people that got unemployed or even got a job but were unable to pay a rent and back at parents home .
    • Little opportunities for electronics:
      • Maintenance
      • some low wage jobs at fabs that are subsidized because you finished your studies.
      • Shady stuff: Free paid TV and others (I prefer to no comment it).
  • I have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder but unfortunately got diagnosed just two years ago and I need to improve a lot in order to become a good student and get job opportunities.

My future

(graphical description about my future)
  • I WANT to pass my vocational school studies.
    • Despite of that, I want to learn about electronics and computing.
      • As you might suspect: I'm very critical about our current educational system.
        • It gets even a lot worse if you aren't "neurotypical".
  • I want to get a job to at least survive myself and able to pay study expenses, but I would love to live in my own home.
  • I wish to someday study at an university, but I'm a massive enthusiast of both computing and electronics:
    • Electrical Engineering
    • Telecommunications Engineering.
    • Computer Science.
    • Physics?

Time to change and improve

I have been thinking these days about my past, present and future. Tons of things happened:

  • I failed the course and got severely bullied by both teachers and schoolmates.
  • I repeated the course with two passed subjects and changed to another sol.
  • I broke with my girlfriend after over three years old relationship.
    • It got extremely toxic and made my progress in order to cope with ADHD to be a lot worse.
  • My study habits and mental health are getting exponentially worse: I'm having severe agoraphobia since some weeks.
At the same time, I have been thinking about how to improve my angst situation:
  • I went to public mental health service with severe issues, most of them related with anxiety. They changed one of my meds, but it takes time to get used to it.

This "hikkikomori" stage made me to remember about certain things:

My fight against chaos!

  • Software (computer one and myself)
    • I'm trying to put my computer systems in shape, but my mind gets distracted. I need to improve both things
    • I need to reinstall my operating systems, fix broken software due to misuse or bad maintaining.
    • I also need to organize over 2TB of messy data. It's insane.
    • I have enormous amounts of homework to do. I need to improve my knowledge exponentially ASAP.
    • Organize my tasks and not waste time, get out of this shitty phase.
    • Prepare a plan and a schedule, try to comply with it.
    • Improve my sleep and eating habits: These days I eat a lot and sleep nothing, not eat and no sleep, eat and sleep too much...
  • Hardware (Physical environment and the ones with chips, cables and others):
    • I need urgently to clean and organize it.
      • There's stuff everywhere, it's annoying chaotical.
        • I see it as an impossible task. I don't know what to do.
    • I need to repair some stuff.
    • Get useful pieces from all other there and throw tons of trash.
    • I need to fix some cable installations.
    • I need to get a comfortable and motivational study room.
      • One of these issues is that one of my cats shit in the floor. It's weird but stubborn female cat.
      • I need to find a no cruelty solution ASAP,she's very stubborn. I need this to be my first electronics project, if there's some way to put devices to make my cats stay away of certain places.

Back to some of my good experiences

  • I forgot about this community.
    • It's nothing personal, it's my shitty memory and anxiety everyday. I wanted to come back again, but always forgot it.
  • I did remember about my brief entrance on this community and receiving lots of support for my homework.
    • Thanks a lot!
  • I hope being an active member in a community might motivate me, help others and get support.
  • Sorry for disappearing.

I even tried to have the insane idea of creating an ADHD geek proactive support group at GitHub (ADHD Geeks, but people got not so much interested at it.

Kind regards.

PS: Can I change my nick to timofonic? I tried to hide myself, but I want to use my usual Internet identify again! :D
