I keep the snipped-off ends of thru-hole components such as resistors and capacitors to use for this. In my case I use them for short jumps on proto boards.

 

Do you know any electricians? Stripped back 1mm twin and earth is about that size.

Well, you can buy them all joined together, i.e. you can buy a spool of bare tinned wire at most hardware stores.

Rather than free hanging construction, I would suggest that you try stripboard circuit construction, using "Veroboard".
