The stepping motor has the characteristics of low inertia, high positioning accuracy, no cumulative error, simple control, etc., and are widely used in mechatronics products, here we only cite a few more representative examples.
1.Belt
Because the belt is a low-rigidity mechanism, it is prone to shake due to inertia. If the motor is not selected properly, it will affect the positioning time of the belt equipment. For example, when the servo motor faces this type of equipment, it takes a certain amount of time to complete the setting. In contrast, because of its high response to commands, stepper motors can quickly complete positioning and rely on sufficient holding power to suppress belt shaking. Not only can it complete the positioning excellently, there is no delay in time. Therefore, many experienced engineers will choose stepping motors when they use belts instead of ball screws to make their own transmissions.

2.Image Inspection Processing Equipment
Because of the simple structure of the stepping motor, the magnetic stator and the rotor with precise small teeth are attracted to each other, and the holding force can be continuously generated when stopped. Therefore, image inspection processing equipment that is not affected by vibration usually uses stepper motor. The stepping motor will not produce micro-vibration by repeatedly adjusting the rotor position after positioning, like servo motors. It is a perfect partner for image inspection processing equipment.

3.Substrate Transfer Equipment
Because the stepping motor has extremely high responsiveness, there is almost no delay, so it is suitable for synchronous operation of multiple motors. For example, the motors are mounted on two conveyor belts, and the substrates are clamped and transported.

4.Cam Mechanism
Since the load of the cam changes with the rotation, if a servo motor is used, it will be difficult to perfectly drive the servo that is too sensitive to adjust the rotor position throughout the time. However the stepping motor has a constant torque at the same speed, it does not require any adjustment and is very easy to use. Therefore, when using a cam, it is recommended to use a stepping motor.

Yes, steppers have their place and are generally suited to low cost positioning devices where any error that may occur due to mis-stepping is of no great account.
But in the field of industrial CNC & Robotics , they have rarely been used by the major manufactureres in these areas.
High speed PID loop servo positioning is the choice for Industrial CNC/Robotics.
They are used however, by the DIY CNC users due to low cost.

Max is correct: there are places for stepper motors and they are not everywhere. And while some steppers have low inertia, some larger ones have a fair amount. Steppers do take a more complex driving circuit, but they are simply adapted to electronic control.
