When are gate drivers needed

From what I understand gate drivers are only needed when the device generating the signal cannot generate sufficient current to charge the mosfet/igbt gate quick enough thus prolonging the duration in the switching region increasing the switching losses.

Aside from these are there any other need to employ gate drivers?

Some gate drivers provide galvanic isolation as another attribute. Magnetic,
photo-voltaic types.

But your thoughts pretty much principal reason they are used.
