What to expect without the optical fiber ?

Setting a pair of these one in front of the other with sight of the optical ports aligned, no optical fiber ?
Would it be an over-the-air optical LAN link ?

Now, what to expect if the optical ports were fitted some lens instead of the fiber, like to diverge/sense a wider angle ?
Would some wider dispersion be achieved ?

Connect on optical fiber better. Through Cat5e speed is much less even if you connect 1 Gbit.

It might work, with a much reduced signal to noise ratio and thus likely much reduced bandwidth. But the device might have some cutoff built-in, to throw an error if the light level is judged too low. Or to ignore light levels that are too low, meaning your signal will be completely ignored.
