Connect on optical fiber better. Through Cat5e speed is much less even if you connect 1 Gbit.

It might work, with a much reduced signal to noise ratio and thus likely much reduced bandwidth. But the device might have some cutoff built-in, to throw an error if the light level is judged too low. Or to ignore light levels that are too low, meaning your signal will be completely ignored.
