What is an emitter controlled diode?

Designerspeak. I like the term. Is this another Orwellian term?

Similar to the Programmable Unijunction Transistor.

It wasn’t programmable but adjustable.
Nor it was unijunction. It actually had 3 junctions.
Not a transistor either. More like a thyristor.

It's still a diode. There is no emitter in the transistor sense, but there are games played with structure and doping to increase efficiency. The reference to an emitter is diode-designerspeak for how charge carriers are sourced inside the diode structure: see https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/abstract/document/5543960
Not all of use are members of IEEE and can't read it because it is behind a paywall, but we can all have a good snigger in a schoolboy humour sort of way at "Controlled Injection of Backside Holes".
