What dictates the temperature of relay

Hi,

I was wondering what dictates thetemperature rating of relay particularly EL210 where it was specified to work from -75C to +125C. It is a latching type relay. I wonder if I use it in a temperature higher than 125C (150C) what are the parts would breakdown or degrades? I am assuming that the mechanical parts such as spring, hinges were the ones to fail. For example the force or retention of the spring would become weak overtime and with enough shock (not higher than 200g) the switch would bounce momentarily. Here is the link for you to review the specifications http://www.pan-pac.com/Product/relays.html
The relay is latching type

Thanks,

Hello,

It could be that at the higher temperature, the magnatisation is getting troubles.

Well I would say that will be true if it’s a magnetic latching relay and unfortunately the this latching relay is a mechanical latching relay. Does anyone have ever tried opening such kind of relay? I am assuming that it only consists of spring and hinges like any other relay but then with some special hinges or lock to keep the switch in one position whenever it is set and then to one position when reset. If that is the case could it be that one spring is under tension while the other is at relaxed depending on which position the switch is at?

hi,
It could be changes in the spring contact metals, most armature relays have contact pressure when the relay is operated or at rest.
Cooling and heating could cause a change in the inherent metal spring contacts.

Well that’s what I’m suspecting to but then I need a solid proof. Have you ever tried opening a mechanical latching relay?

Thanks

hi,
Never stripped one down to examine its internals.
Have you considered contacting the manufacturer, they will have run tests to determine the temperature limits.?
If you do get some info, please let us know.
