When I was a dumb kid (still not so smart but smarter because of this experiment) I shot a 22 at a lump of lead. Had the target tilted so that if something bounced off it would bounce up. It did. And it came back down and hit right next to the bedroom window. No damage - but a close enough call to convince me to get smarter quicker. Did that a total number of times of ONCE!

Lesson here is "Never shoot at a hard flat surface where the flat is perpendicular to your position.
To a high speed bullet, water is a hard flat surface. The Marines and Navy gunners would let us have fun their M-60's while towing old punctured blood bags as bait for sharks (this was after the VN war during the boat people exodus). If you hit the water just right on a wave you could hear the whistle (or crack) of rounds flying back if they were very close.

As seen on MythBusters, they shot bullets into a pool. The water destroyed the bullets. If you're just a few feet below the surface you can't be shot with a bullet. Arrows are a different subject. The long shaft and the slow speed allows the penetration of the arrow can be 10 to 15 feet.

MythBusters wasn't using a machine gun from a distance or skipping rounds at angles.

They didn't bust anything about skipping rounds or ricochets. They just proved that 30 degrees at 3 feet from water won't work, not that it never will.

We used to do training flights, in small aircraft like Cessna 182s, as intercept targets for fighters. The scenarios varied a lot -- sometimes we were suspected drug runners, other times we were lost or incapacitated pilots. Even though we knew it was just a training exercise, when you are intercepted by a pair of jet fighters, it is an intimidating experience.
Here's some cool pictures showing what I was talking about. As I was told by the chief pilot before my first mission: "What you are going to experience today is un-f*&$%ing-real!"

He was right.

It tracks the sun’s position in the sky. It chimes with the sound of hammers hitting four miniature gongs. It even tells the wearer when certain stars will be visible from Earth. Swiss watchmaker Vacheron Constantin’s latest timepiece is not just packed with novel features — it is, officially, the most complicated mechanical wristwatch ever produced.
In horology, a “complication” refers to any function that goes beyond standard time-telling, such as a Gregorian calendar or moon phase display. And Vacheron Constantin’s new Les Cabinotiers Solaria Ultra Grand Complication contains a record-breaking 41 of them.

Don't buy cheap bearings for a precision device.

The old versions were built by Sheffield in 1940s and have been used by the US Navy to find the quietest bearing available.

Watching these videos is strangely satisfying... seeing how what at first looks like a useless, discarded dirt rag turns into a beautiful and colorful carpet.
