Still one of the coolest things ever, to watch one take off at Kadena and then to see the signals reports as it makes the Soviet border run as they try to track it.
When the only SR-71 I ever worked on (diverted to our base with a blown fuel pump) took off, it punch up through a scattered light clouds and went through one of them. What was amazing was that the hole it punched in the cloud stayed there for over a minute before it filled back in completely. Guess there was no wind at that altitude. Beautiful sight to see.

In the first sequence "in the hanger" notice the "liquid" on the floor. Their fuel tanks leaked like a sieve on the ground. The starter carts must have been not only Intrinsically Safe/Explosion Proof electrically but also their exhaust system cooled to below the fuel vapor ignition point. Typically, that electrical classification requires non-sparking (brass or bronze) tools. Once off the ground, first on the list was refueling as the fuel tank leaks at altitude and low temperature had finally sealed. There were so many quirks to the Blackbird that it was a miracle they flew. But they certainly did fly! They have one on display on posts low enough to actually touch it outside the base museum at the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL.

There were also A12 Blackbirds flying out of Kadena AB, Okinawa. There was a Naval facility on Kadena that used their 'product'.

Spy plane looking at sky ship.

There was a Soviet naval Sub base here the aircraft would do passes 'near'. Take-off from Okinawa, re-fuel, head north for the big circle, turn and and swoop down hugging the Russian border.

That clip didn’t really include enough information about the date or location but it struck a chord with me. When I was younger my father worked for Yuba engineering in Benicia California. This was around 1969 or so. At that time they were building and installing big valves and piping for the California Water project. But Yuba had also built gold dredges one of which was still in operation.
So we drive up to visit it. It was similar to what those guys were climbing on except still operating. A huge bucket chain in the front bringing up gravel from the bottom and dumping it into an on board wash plant. Then the tailings were dumped out the back from a long boom. It was incredibly noisy. And impressive too. The operator controlled it by depressing pedals and pulling on various levers.
If you are in the Sacramento area you will see the tailings as piles of coarse gravel. Those are the remains of that industry. And now are still sold for landscaping.

cmartinez I clicked on the space capsule and it took me to a link that started telling me my Mac had five virus'. I wouldn't recommend anyone else click on it. I surely won't click on it again.

Recommended to moderators to check into whether there's a threat here or not. cmartinez if you get a notification it's because there might be an issue with that link. I don't think you or anyone else is trying to cause problems. Just wanted to let you know what's going on. If it's not systemic it may just be on my end. But I still recommend avoiding that site just because I experienced an issue.

That is very, VERY strange ..., I've checked the link and its "clean" as far as tracking info and the like is concerned. Perhaps the Interesting Engineering website has been somehow hacked? ... That portal has been around for years and it's a decent one, as far as I know. Also, I do not get the notification you've reported.
