variable capacitor (how to use)

I'm using a variable capacitor for my AM/FM receiver but it cant receive , i assume that the problem is the var. capacitor.

it is same as this


can some one help me?

what is the purpose of letter D?

It might be arranged as below but there's no telling the AM side from the FM side without data. D is probably an earth connection for the shaft to eliminate 'hand effect' - a hand being near changing the tuning.

There is a big difference between AM and FM
Look inside the tuning capacitor. The FM has only a few moving vanes. The AM has lots more.
