Hi,

You'll need a debounce citcuit to use the switch and get a good clock. An R-S latch works very well for that. Look at a 74xx279 for the function, anthough a pair of NAND gates will work as well.

You will find a lot of difference between original TTL and CMOS HCT logic. Datasheets should explicitly spell out those differences.

 

Motorola makes a Switch Debounce IC part number MC14490. It is actually capable of debouncing 6 switch with the single IC.
