Good point. I was thinking that you could indeed accomplish some communication as those devices are intended to, but that's very far from adding "wireless capability to a printer" as requested.

From a bunch of pictured dongles at that link, only one mentions printer use; and in other vendor sources, the 'fast'IR do not show speed. Something obscure with such gadgets. Prices range from a couple of $ to over $100, cannot discern clear data about them.
If the IR link was comparable to the USB speed the guess would be 'should work' ?
Will dig deeper, perhaps there is a proper one :confused:

As I said, speed is only one issue.
USB is not a UART.
When a USB device is plugged into a USB port, there is negotiation between the host and device. The host sends a command and the device has to respond with identification.

USB protocol is not the same as irDA protocol. It would be like asking too Arabic speakers to start communicating in Greek.
