USB distance question

Since a keyboard is a low speed USB device the cable length is limited to 3 meters according to the USB spec. If a USB 2.0 hub is added, Ive been told the cable length can increase to 5 meters. Does it matter what end of the cable the hub is attached to (host or device side)? Does the hub increase the keyboard signal speed from low speed to full or high speed?

Have you tried just hooking it up without a hub? I have never had any problems with USB >3M. I just hooked up a printer with about 20ft of USB extension cables and it worked just fine

There are some great devices out there that can extend USB distance, sometimes using other cables such as CAT5E. You should check out your local computer hardware store... There are even wireless USB devices that work with all asynchronous USB applications (ie, not video cameras).

Thanks for the replies but they don't answer my questions. I searched usb.org with no luck so figured I would try this forum.
