Consider that for almost a hundred years, both telegraph and telephone operation has been full duplex over a single pair of wires. The original concept of USB was that it would be simplex, with bi-directional sharing. and I did see an initial promotion showing a USB as a monitor feed. Totally dumb!!

Consider that monitors, above all other devices that connect to a computer box, already have a well defined interface. Consider then that the USB was intended to reduce the confusion of those devices connecting with the RS232 interface. Monitors did not use that serial interface, nor had they used it up until that time.
