UPS problem, not charging?

Hi All,

I have an APC 700W UPS, about 5 years old. The "dead battery" icon is NOT lit up, but the battery charge icon is at the lowest end of the scale and blinking. Had a power outage a couple days ago and, yup, everything on the UPS went out too. I removed the battery and it shows 11.86v, tried another similar (gate opener) battery which was charged and got the same icon status as above. I do have a query in at APC but haven't heard back yet. I'm ASSuming I'll need to buy a new UPS, is there anything that can be done with this one? I'm thinking it's toast, as good batteries are showing up dead...

Hello Russ, I would double check the Fuse on the back of the unit. Could be where the power comes into the unit as it is on mine. Most times I have had the inside Auto reset inside trip only once had an issue with the fuse on the outside of the unit. On mine it has an extra fuse in the holder when you remove the fuse from the back mine had a hole where the extra one was stored. Replaced it and mine started working again. Not sure if your problem is the same issue or not.

Just an idea.

James,

All APC could tell me was to try a new battery, which I had already done. I installed a new BR1000G today, I'll do an autopsy on the old one to see why it fails to recognize that a battery is attached. I'll have to remove the case anyway to see if there's a fuse...

Hope things work out for you, I know that mine has the 120v coming in fuse at the back, Inside on top they installed a blade fuse they soldered into the board. No issue with that one so far.

Price of these today I look at them as consumables. Kind of like Laptops and PC, If one goes bad I just replace it... Now the PC for my son that I bought him for Christmas that is different story. It breaks down I will repair it. He has already went though 2 keyboards. If it is less then a grand if broke past a PS buy a new one. Most times a better one comes along just as soon as you buy one anyway lol...

Well, there's nothing wrong with the UPS. Found that it's battery had a small bulge in the rear wall opposite the terminals and even though it shows 11.86v, does nothing for the unit. My N-I-B spare battery will not hold a charge, guess it sat too long without use. I found all this out when I got frustrated and hooked this thing up to a car battery. Bingo, it worked! :D Will order another battery and set this up in another room...
