Ok, I'm opening up this thread to ask @cmartinez if he ever tried the https://www.ti.com/product/TPL5010 mentioned in Post 2 and/or whether the microAmp promise of the PIC10F part was realized as microAmps.

Nope... never tried it. I can tell you, though, that there are extremely low power RTC out there with alarm and timer capabilities that make them useful without needing to use an MCU. Let me know if you're interested and I'll dig a bit more.
