This is what I was looking at...

 

There is a white and red led in each of the rectangle eyes supplied with only 2 wires the switch push changes the color from white to red with no components next to the leds

 

The 10 ohm resistor is the internal resistance of your battery. Closing the switch turns off the blue (white) LED with 3V forward voltage and turns on the red LED with 2V forward voltage.

Well that's a lot simpler than my version.

 

after looking at the leds on the small pcb they are reversed on the same supply,
so its just the small tactile latch switch thats inverting the supply.
so do I get double pole latching.... so it flips the polarity..

 

Ok...should be able to do this with a alternate action DPDT PB switch.
But...either there is enough series resistance to keep the LEDs from blowing or there is a series resistor somewhere.
See attached. Each battery shown has 10 ohms series resistance.
