When mounting a TO3 transistor to a heatsink does it go:

Transistor
Bird Crap(the white stuff thermal stuff)
Insulator (mica in this case)
Birdcrap
Heatsink

Or does it go

Transistor
Insulator
Birdcrap
Heatsink.

Birdcrap?!?

Great. Now I'm NEVER going to be able to put the stuff on with my fingers again...

I put it on both sides of the insulator. I've salvaged stuff with compound on both sides of the insulator as well.

Couldn't we call it "goo" or "glop" or "heat-sink compound?"

hi

you can do any of what you have enumerated. if the device does not dissipate so much heat your 1st scenario will do. if it does, your 2nd scenario will handle it better.

you can use cotton buds so the crap won't mess your fingers :p :D
