I'm wondering what may be the options for installing tracking devices to be able to detect the location of a misplaced (aka stolen) electronics device. The situations have been these things disappearing from backpacks, travel bags, brief cases, etc when in a public setting.
I don't think that software would be the best choice for this as the devices may be turned off when taken. The devices are most likely going to be within a hundred yards (probably less) from where they disappear, when they are noticed to be gone, so being able to quickly locate the device with some kind of receiver would be excellent.
I've seen inside most of these devices and I think there is room for something like a battery for a hearing aid (or even a few), or even larger.
Would an RF chip that broadcasts constantly when in questionable situations be the best route for this and then use a receiver and walk around trying to find a signal?
What are some options here for this type of problem?
(on a side note, if anyone is wondering this type of thing effects everyone these days when their devices mysteriously disappear at certain locations, maybe while being searched for "dangerous" or prohibited items).. This is very well documented by the 5 major US national media companies as well as almost every foreign news outlet warning travelers to the US (oh, we should be SOOO proud!!)...
