are toroid and binocular cores inter changable? i'm totally out of my depth here so this might come off as stupid. looking at toroids.info a t50-3 at 200khz and 5000uh requires 534 turns through the toroid whereas a bn-73-202 binocular core only requires 20. clearly i'd much rather wind 20 turns then 534, but i don't know whether it's apples to apples.

I would bet that these two devices have drastically different permeabilities. Get a toroid with the same permeability as the other and your turns should be near 20.

interesting. the binocular core has an al=12000 whereas the t50-3 is 17.5. looking at digikey i was able to find this toroid

https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/ferroxcube/TX22-14-6.4-3E65/1779-1529-ND/8021243
which is lower then the 12000 of the binocular core, but persumably that just means i may need to wind ie 30 turns instead of 20. if true i'd probably have to pick up an LCR meter to make sure. otherwise i haven't been readily able to find standard toroid shapes with an Al near 12000

they also have these split things

https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/epcos-tdk/B65807J0000Y066/B65807J0000Y066-ND/3914132
which i presume require a bobbin and clip/mount, but i've never used them before, so they're a little scary. and at $2.50 a shot could be an "expensive" experiment
