Some things are too nutty even for the people of Portland.

The county has already purchased more than $80,000 of such supplies, including glass pipes, tin foil and snorting kits.

Multnomah County hits pause on plan to distribute tin foil, straws for fentanyl users
But in her full statement, Chair Vega Pederson did not seem to reject the proposal on its face — expressing openness to the Multnomah County Health Department's plan once it gets a closer look.

Taxes and death, of a city.

San Francisco’s array of business taxes—which include the Gross Receipts Tax along with newer fees like the Homelessness Gross Receipts Tax and the Commercial Rents Tax—are the city’s second-largest source of revenue after property taxes. Voters also approved an Overpaid Executive Tax meant to target companies with large pay gaps between top executives and rank-and-file workers

But the potential damage from remote work doesn’t stop at business tax collections. A decline in property values and leasing activity negatively affects transfer taxes paid when buildings are sold, as well as commercial rent taxes paid by landlords

It's going to be very, very hard to go back to re-criminalizing drugs now ... as soon as that happened, all the jails would get overflowed and the legal system would be overwhelmed ... I feel for the decent few citizens of Portland, it must be sad seeing how their once flourishing city has been turned into no man's land ...

At four in the afternoon the streets can feel like dealer central,” said Jennifer Myrle, who runs a downtown coffee shop and wine bar with her brother. “At least 20 to 30 people in ski masks, hoodies and backpacks, usually on bikes and scooters. There’s no point calling the cops.” On her walk to work, Myrle often sees needles, shattered glass, human feces and people who are passed out.

In today’s newsletter, I’ll use Oregon’s disappointing experience to consider a larger lesson about drug policy.

Unfortunately, most people think with their feelings instead of with their minds ... I've had several discussions with a friend or two of mine who still think decriminalizing drugs would be a good idea, and they will simply not listen to logic or to tangible proof or to evidence ... it's as if a mindset firmware has been burned itself in their brains and they've become uncapable of reason.
