"Refuse to sign, and he'd risk his job, his career, and the good life he'd built for his wife and four children."
I'm pretty sure the dead astronauts feel the same way! Did he have the authority to stop the launch ?
I have refused to sign off on technology that didn't cut the mustard, my replacement signed off on the technology he's in a federal prison and was ultimately responsible for 55 souls Lost on a commercial jet. Did not make me feel any better!

Rioters Set Fire to Federal Courthouse in Portland One Day after Fencing Removed
The attack on the courthouse came one day after authorities removed fencing initially erected over the summer, in response to continued riots following the death of George Floyd, an African American man killed during his arrest by Minneapolis police officers.

Security fence comes down around federal courthouse in Portland
On Tuesday, the Federal Protective Service confirmed it sees no reason to keep the fence up.

“We’re working with our partners and the community to return to a sense of normalcy.” said Robert Spurling, communications director for the Federal Protective Service. Spurling said the removal will take a couple of days.

“The courthouse will look just like it looked before.” he said.
Exactly, burned and vandalized.

Here is a sobering thought.

If the LHC ever creates a black hole there is nothing to worry.

We will never know.
There's essentially 0% chance of that happening, the LHC can't produce anywhere near the required energy densities. And even if some spectacularly improbable event occurred, like a high-energy cosmic gamma ray making it all the way through the atmosphere to the exact spot where a proton-proton collision is occurring, if a black hole were somehow formed it'd be a micro black hole, which would evaporate itself away almost instantly.

An actual sobering thought is that the universe is in a false vacuum, i.e., the Higgs field has a local (not global) minimum energy density. If this is true, then it is almost certain that somewhere in the universe a high energy event (or even a measly quantum fluctuation) will nudge that region of space into true vacuum. This could create a bubble of true vacuum that spreads at the speed of light, destroying all matter in its path as it reconfigures space. Because of its speed, we wouldn't see it coming.

The "good news" is that since this ultimate phase transition hasn't already occurred, it's likely a low-probability event. On the other hand, it may have already happened a billion years ago, in a region of space a billion light years away, and tonight is Earth's last night of existence. Sweet dreams. :)
