She has competition. Last week a neighbor sent the police to my house#12 he can try but you know HP is dedicated hermit, just sayin'![]()
I for one have found "honesty-centric" to be an effective way to get people to leave me alone. Both of them are false representations; the Very Formal Tone and the Numpty with serious intellect and education. I prefer people who present themselves as who they are. You might call that honesty-centric, which I would be happy to call my own.
Her first. Besides the culture shock of being around someone at her level would be tough on me. I might have to play above my C- game and I am not so sure I can even do that any more.Try HP.![]()
Dammit, that is my favorite type of person though. Stay home, do their own thing, geek out as needed.#12 he can try but you know HP is dedicated hermit, just sayin'![]()
You must travel with a very different crowd than I do. I feel lucky that I deal mostly with home owners bc they are at least smart enough to accomplish that. Writing intellectual papers? You know who comprises your audience. Most, "average" people fit the title of this Thread, "just plain sad".she's always saying informality is just rude to readers and listeners and I totally agree cuz being informal is totally the same as condescension!
#12 Busybody neighbors are the worst! Funny how police call intrusion like that _welfare check_ when it's really just tax payer funded snooping serviceShe has competition. Last week a neighbor sent the police to my housebecause he couldn't tell if I was still alive.

I think it's more of the fact that many of us play our own intelligence and abilities down yet even when doing so are still shocked at how we still manage to be playing the game at a level above the majority.#12 I say respecting ppls intelligence is always appreciated no matter what _crowd_ they're in! Now I say calling most ppl _just plain sad_ is flirting with wrath of @Raymond Genovese
!
My heart was in, "fight or flight" mode before I opened the door, but he wasn't twitching his gun hand or hiding behind a parked car. No exaggeration. That happened once because I called the police to see about somebody breaking my front door. Apparently the police thought, a) a burglar would answer the door and, b) show them a gun, but I disappointed them.#12 Busybody neighbors are the worst! It should be obvious to you that most of the regular contributors here are in the top 1% of the I.Q. curve, but nobody writes like HP. Half a dozen have said her writing is difficult for them. If I believed you, everybody except HP is chronically condescending, but I don't believe you.say respecting ppls intelligence is always appreciated no matter what _crowd_ they're in! #12 you're totally right! Cuz the person who reports a crime or even just fire or road hazard is always treated like suspectAnd yes, I learned my lesson. I quit calling the police to solve my problems about 30 years ago. Half the time they threaten to arrest me for interrupting their doughnut break.![]()
#12 I totally agree with thatIt should be obvious to you that most of the regular contributors here are in the top 1% of the I.Q. curve
#12 I say no two ppl write or speak exactly alike but I've encountered a lot of ppl who are as formal as HP and some who are more formalbut nobody writes like HP.
#12 I didn't mean to say thatIf I believed you, everybody except HP is chronically condescending
Everybody is a suspect when your primary job is to find ways to collect money.#12 you're totally right! Cuz the person who reports a crime or even just fire or road hazard is always treated like suspect!
If that's who HP really is, I withdraw my request to spend time in her presence.communicating at level below oneself that's condescending cuz its dishonest cuz of like what you were saying abt _false representation_
#12 if that means I'm sounding like HP has superiority complex that's not true at allIf that's who HP really is, I withdraw my request to spend time in her presence.
I try to adjust my presentation to address the listener. I guess that means I'm condescending most of the time.communicating at level below oneself that's condescending
I know HP's being totally honest cuz that's how she's always expressed herself!
That is not what I said. You are sounding like HP is actually the person she presents here. Very Formal Tone, or as HP said her acquaintances called her, "Icily Formal". If that's who she really is, being around her in person serves no purpose because I would not get a second point of view from direct exposure.if that means I'm sounding like HP has superiority complex that's not true at all
Watch the movie, "idiocracy". You'll see your theory in action.Do you ever wonder if, headed in the direction we are, we'll eventually reach a time when one generation passes from the scene and the next generation can't figure out how to keep the lights burning, keep clean water flowing from the taps, keep the petrol flowing from the gas pumps, and keep the roads maintained?
I do.
#12 remember thisI try to adjust my presentation to address the listener. I guess that means I'm condescending most of the time.![]()
Anyhow I can tell you that by her own confession HP doesn't have that ability any more than I do! So you're not being condescending by talking on someone's level cuz you already know their level#12 remember how you once said you have ability to divine purview of ppl asking questions? I say that's great gift I just don't haveSo it just means I inherited teacher wannabe gene from HP

#12 I say maybe he was just who he was when he was _wearing hat_I never learned who he was.
#12 HP is totally as _frosty_ an like she says LN2You are sounding like HP is actually the person she presents here. Very Formal Tone, or as HP said her acquaintances called her, "Icily Formal".
Gotta agree with that. The person I am at work is pretty much the person I am at home or anywhere else. (I'm too lazy to try and run with multiple personalities.)#12 I say maybe he was just who he was when he was _wearing hat_!
So getting her to have a silly one sided conversation with a cat that meows back when talked to is not likely going to happen very often?#12 HP is totally as _frosty_ an like she says LN2! But she's a lot less formal when speaking casually than she is at speaking events or writing
So if you're expecting her to be _touchy feely_ you'd be totally disappointed which I say is good thing cuz touchy feely ppl are usually needy, neurotic and basically childlike weaklings
which is NOT HP
!
Another vote for that. The only difference between who I really am and what I present is adjusting for the audience, and I've never before seen an audience that works at the level of HP and Aleph. Again agreeing with TCM, it's a real stretch to adjust to their level of communication. For most others, it's either a level playing field or I'm dumbing it down for noobies, at least in the field of electronics. Several, "real" engineers can run circles around me, and out of my field, I'm as bad as any other noobie. That's why I'm not playing on a Chemistry site. The person I am at work is pretty much the person I am at home or anywhere else. (I'm too lazy to try and run with multiple personalities.)![]()
That's maybe because, when dealing with HP and Aleph, you are the audience...I've never before seen an audience that works at the level of HP and Aleph.
Chemistry is no different from engineering. It is all easy when you focus on one area of chemistry. The problem is that people walk up to a chemist and ask about this or that and most questions, statistically, are outside of that chemist's expertise (organic synthesis, analytical chemistry, surfactant formulation, polyurethane foam formulation, polymer testing, injection molding (crossing over into engineering), ...).Another vote for that. Noooo! As noted in the article there may be other math courses more suited to the student's major (statistics for example) that might be required.
