I asked my daughter if she had seen my newspaper...

She rolled her eyes and said "OK boomer, we don't use those anymore".

She said that people use tablets nowadays and handed me her iPad.

That fly didn't stand a chance.

I think they got that idea from Taiwan.

When I was there in 2009 for my honeymoon, I was shocked at the driving there. Good thing my new wife did all the driving -- I would have gotten us killed in well under an hour!

In the north (like, Teipei), people often stopped at stop lights, but far from guaranteed. The notion of not entering an intersection unless you could get through on the current cycle was a totally foreign concept. And I saw people driving on the sidewalks to get around traffic not once, but three times.

In the south, stop signs and stop lights were merely mild suggestions with people frequently not even slowing down for them if they thought they could get through before approaching traffic got there.

Still, I saw very few accidents or cars with obvious damage to them -- so people have clearly learned to drive under those chaotic conditions. I would imagine that they have far better situational awareness skills than your typical American driver, who generally relies on the presumption that other drivers will follow the rules (a presumption that is increasingly not justified).

FWIW, I was in Joshua Tree NP last month and it was fine, except for the cholla teddy bear cactus garden that was getting a new trail installed.

Oops, this is the jokes thread.
